"Where do I start with spring maintenance?"

As we leave the cold wet winter months behind, we start to prepare for the longer warmer days ahead.

Now is a great time to take your home out of "hibernation" mode and sort out those maintenance jobs that could not be completed over winter.

We can all agree that there are tasks on Waiheke that we all need to complete, even though we are aware that every home is unique and that some require less/more care than others.

A good place to start with your "spring maintenance" are as follows -

1.) Gutters: Gutters need to be checked, cleaned and down pipes are kept clear of debris. On the island, water is expensive, making water collection essential if the summer is particularly dry.

2.) Roof: It is a good time to check your roof and see how it fared throughout the winter. If the paint finish is subpar, you notice any rusty screws, etc, now is a great time to get quotes to repaint, replace rusty screws and washers, and seal any areas that may have allowed water or moisture to enter.

By doing this now, you can get the work booked in and completed over the dry months.

3.) Exterior: Check your cladding, decks, handrails, joinery to see if there are any areas that need to be cleaned, repaired or replaced.

4.) Pool: If you have a pool, it is a good idea to book in a pool service and double check that pool gates/handles are all safe and secure.

5.)  Outdoor lighting: Check that your outdoor lighting is working and that your sensors are clean and free from cobwebs, etc.

6.) Gardens and lawns: Gardens, hedges, and lawns will have more growth over the next couple of months. It is a good time to attend to weeding, pruning, and attending to the lawns on a fortnightly basis.

7.) Pest control: If you do not have pest control set up at your home, now is a good time to get something in place. The Mouse and Rat Counter Trap by Good Nature is a great toxin-free device that is also safe for pets.
